What we actually use to keep pigeons off our balcony
I tried a lot of things on a balcony high up in a Bangkok tower. Some helped for a while. The combination below is what finally worked. We rarely see birds there now, and the view is still open.

What we use
Five pieces, each with one job. Alone, each one only helped a little. Together, they kept the birds away.
-
Small railing bird spikes
Best for: Stopping pigeons from landing on a narrow railing without blocking much of the view.
We zip tied small spikes along the top of the railing. Measure the rail first, then keep the strips tight so they do not shift in wind or rain.
-
Outdoor zip ties
Best for: Fastening spike strips or a light barrier to a railing without drilling.
Zip ties held our spikes in place. Pick UV resistant ties so they do not go brittle in the sun, and trim the ends flush so nothing sharp sticks out.
-
Bird netting for the air conditioner area
Best for: Closing off one open area, like the space around an outdoor air conditioner.
Netting helped the most around our air conditioner. Keep it tight and check it often for gaps. Never block the unit’s airflow or service access.
-
Reflective deterrents
Best for: Adding movement and flashes of light around a railing or open balcony edge.
We started with old CDs. They helped somewhat at first, and worked better as one part of the setup than on their own. Hang them so they move in the breeze.
-
Wind chimes
Best for: Adding occasional sound and movement near a landing spot.
Our chimes helped a bit, but birds still came when we used them alone. They worked better next to the spikes, netting and reflective pieces.
What did not work for us
Fake owls
We tried fake owls first. The pigeons got used to them, so they were not a lasting answer for our balcony.
Why we use all five
Nothing worked on its own. The netting closed off the air conditioner area. The spikes took away the railing landing spot. The reflective discs and chimes kept the balcony from feeling still and safe. Together, that was enough to keep it clear without closing off the view.
